In one of the most impactful changes to the identity ecosystem in recent times, Web Authentication Level 1, or simply WebAuthn, is now a recommended standard of the World Wide Web Consortium. WebAuthn marks a major milestone in the application of practical, strong and privacy–preserving authentication on the web. 

WebAuthn is a core component of the FIDO2 project, an initiative centered on using public-key cryptography as a standardized interface for authenticating users to web-based applications and services. By enabling the WebAuthn standard, the W3C is underscoring the need for a more secure way to access web resources than passwords alone.
